When you hear that your child’s school, nursery, baby toddler class are celebrating World
Book Day, do you:
- Rush to the nearest supermarket for a costume
- Head to vinted/ Ebay for a second-hand bargain
- Make a full-on outfit from scratch
- Leave it to the last minute and create a costume from clothes that your child
already has - None of the above
I’m sure that when you read the options, most of you could identify with one of the first four. The truth is none of this really matters – having the ‘perfect costume’ creates unhealthy stress and sometimes even more unhealthy competition between the adults more so than the children. Yet – when your child wears their costume with pride, celebrating their favourite book character, if we are going to be honest with ourselves, we secretly love capturing the moment on camera – knowing that these moments won’t last forever. Before you know it, dressing up won’t be cool anymore.
Take the costume element away and you have what World Book Day really is about and that is to celebrate reading. Here at Debutots we really believe it’s never too early to encourage a love of stories, which is why we do what we do. None of us see what we do as a job. We really embody our slogan, ‘imagination takes you everywhere.’ The dancing around and the silly voices really is a part of who we are; real life bookworms, who are lucky enough to share our enjoyment of stories with your little ones on a daily/ weekly basis.
So remember a book is for life, not just for World Book Day. Talk about your favourite books, read a book with your little ones in bed with all the teddies. Make a story box, or puppets for a book character, or even adopt the Debutots style of acting out a story. Your children might outgrow the activities and the dressing up but hopefully they won’t lose the love for reading.
Thanks to Zoe, our new franchisee, soon to be bringing the magic of Debutots to Kingston!
